Etsaut - The village where we are situated
Etsaut is a sleepy village, situated on the east bank of the Aspe river. It has about 70 full-time residents. Its position is unique inasmuch as it is on the crossing point of two major walking routes: the ancient pilgrimage route known as the Camino de Santiago de Compostela (which follows the valley from North to South), and the GR10 long-distance footpath (which stretches from West to East, from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean coasts). Consequently, in the summer months, it is an important stopping point for both for pilgrims and for hikers and climbers. In the main village square, there is a café-bar, a small grocery shop, and a post office. There is also a (Summer) Sunday market. On the other side of the river, about 10 minutes walk from Etsaut, is the medieval village of Borce, which also has similar facilities.
